Base Amount and Commitment

Base amount and commitment are separate product settings available on usage-based products. Configure them from the product's Modify drawer after adding the usage product to a plan template or contract.

A base amount sets a minimum monetary charge for a usage product, even when usage is zero. A commitment sets the minimum amount or quantity the customer has committed to consume or pay for during the configured period.

Base Amount

Base amount is only applicable for metered or usage-based products. It is useful when a usage product should always generate at least a minimum charge.

To configure a base amount:

  1. Go to Plans & Pricing.
  2. Create or open a plan template or contract.
  3. Add a usage-based product.
  4. Select Modify on the product line item.
  5. Open the usage or data-metering settings.
  6. Select Set Base Amount.
  7. Enter the minimum amount to charge when no usage is metered.

Base amount charges are added to the customer's invoice according to the product and contract billing settings.

Commitment

Commitment is configured on a usage-based product line item. A commitment can be defined by price or by units.

A price-based commitment defines the minimum monetary amount the customer has committed to. A unit-based commitment defines the minimum quantity the customer has committed to consume.

To configure a commitment:

  1. Go to Plans & Pricing.
  2. Create or open a plan template or contract.
  3. Add a usage-based product.
  4. Select Modify on the product line item.
  5. Open the usage or data-metering settings.
  6. Select Set Commitment.
  7. Choose whether the commitment is measured by price or units.
  8. Enter the commitment value.
  9. Configure reset and refill behavior if applicable.

Commitment Settings

Commitment settings can include commitment type, reset cadence, auto-refill behavior, and meter dependencies.

Commitment type determines whether the commitment is tracked as a monetary amount or as units.

Meter reset determines when usage counters reset. Commitment behavior depends on the configured meter reset because the reset defines the window in which usage is measured against the commitment.

Auto-refill controls whether the commitment balance is replenished automatically at the configured reset cadence.

Meter refill adds value back to the commitment or credit balance according to the configured refill behavior. Meter reset defines when the measurement window starts over; meter refill defines whether and how the available balance is replenished.

Product Availability

Base amount and commitment settings are configured per product. Usage-based products can expose different combinations of settings depending on the pricing model.

  • Tiered products can use tier tables, meter reset behavior, base amount, commitment, and credits allocation.
  • Volume products can use volume thresholds, meter reset behavior, base amount, commitment, and credits allocation.
  • Per Unit products can use a single unit price, base amount, commitment, bulk pricing, meter reset behavior, and credits allocation.
  • Revenue Share products can use percentage-based pricing, minimum and maximum thresholds, base amount, commitment, and data metering settings.
  • Tiered Subscription products can use tiered subscription pricing, automatic upgrade behavior, schedule settings, and applicable product-level modifications.

Configure the meter reset before finalizing commitment behavior. The reset cadence determines the period in which usage is counted against the commitment.
